For its antioxidant content, hibiscus flowers beat out green tea! Hibiscus flowers are anti-inflammatory, help to lower high blood pressure, uric acid levels (cause of gout), and improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels in both diabetic and non diabetics. Hibiscus flowers also inhibit growth of human cancer cells, and is high in magnesium (reducing muscle tension and constipation).

Chia seeds provide fiber slowing the rate at which blood sugar rises and helps to clean the digestive tract. Chia seeds contain protein, essential fatty acids, vitamin Bs, minerals magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorous, calcium and zinc. Coconut syrup comes from the sap of the coconut palm. It contains minerals iron, calcium, zinc and potassium, essential fatty acids, polyphenols and antioxidants. Coconut syrup contains a fibre called inulin that help to slow glucose absorption, giving it a lower glycemic index than sugar.

To make this tasty nutritious drink you will need the following ingredients:

1 C dried hibiscus flowers

8-9 C water (hot)

2 C chia seeds (any color)

1/4 C coconut syrup + or –

Directions:

Fill a large glass jug with hot water (not boiled), add the hibiscus flowers and soak 4-6 hours.

Set a larger strainer over a large glass bowl and slowly pour hibiscus water mixture over to catch and separate hydrated flowers from infused water.

Remove the strainer and discard flowers. Use a wide mouth funnel to slowly pour hibiscus water back into the glass jug. Add chia seeds to infused water and stir. 

Cover with a lid or a cloth and refrigerate. Stir every 1/2 hour for 4 rounds to prevent clumping of chia seeds. Cover and leave in fridge 12 hours. When chia has fully hydrated stir in coconut syrup. Serve without ice with a garnish of orange and lime.. Nutritious and delicious! Kids love the feeling of the swollen chia seeds on the tongue and in the stomach.

Tip: Drinks sold in stores of similar style are required to be pasteurized and contain preservatives which digestion and nutrition uptake; as well they are expensive. Now you can keep you dollars while enjoying a fresh living beverage loaded with nutrition for you and your loved ones! Yum!
